- Alexander Semyonovich, in what a difference between "just" headache and migraine?

- On external manifestations it is not so simple to distinguish them. But origin of pain a miscellaneous, and, so, methods of fight against it are various too. At a usual headache, all of us know, it is enough to take any vasodilating drug - and pain will pass. What origins of a headache at migraine when the person feels the acute pulsing pain, nausea, a photophobia, etc.?

It appeared, at migraine the hyperactivity of adrenal glands is observed. They are responsible for adaptation of an organism during a stress and emit adrenaline which narrows vessels. If during a usual headache adrenal glands excrete adrenaline once, then at a migrenepodobny attack they continue to work hyperactive, constantly producing this hormone of a stress throughout a long time. The head of the person "breaks up", the organism spends all forces for that to compensate by something continuous impact of adrenaline on the narrowed vessels. And, if at this moment of people takes vasodilating medicine, it does not work. Its medical action is not enough to suppress constantly emitted adrenaline and to stop narrowing of vessels.

- What reasons can cause migraine?

- The reasons can be a little. One of them – neurosises, single or constant. First of all, the neuroendocrine system (including adrenal glands and a thyroid gland) is responsible for development of neurosises in us in an organism which passes into the hyperactivity mode. And constant production of hormones of a stress, including adrenaline, leads to narrowing of vessels. And, not to single, and constant.

- How the modern medicine investigates work of adrenal glands?

- To precisely estimate work of adrenal glands – a task very labor-consuming today. The world medicine knows very few such ways - all of them are rather difficult and less informative. However, we managed to find rather simple method of definition of a condition of adrenal glands. We developed the double dynamic stress hormones test. In a nutshell that its essence is as follows: the person makes blood test on stress hormones (adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine). Then he receives some stressful influence (for example, it is offered to listen to the concerning, disturbing music), and then he repeatedly takes a blood test on stress hormones. Thus, we have an opportunity to compare the level of these hormones before and after the procedure and to estimate reaction of adrenal glands to a stress. On a difference of levels of hormones of a stress it is possible to tell, work of adrenal glands is how broken.

- It is known that women have a headache much more often than men. What it is connected with?

- Really, statistically have migraine of the woman by 10 times more often than men. The reason of it is an imbalance of some hormones. It is caused by the fact that men have one main sex hormone - testosterone, and women have their two: estrogen and progesterone. Cyclic "work" in a female body of these hormones-antogonistov influences mood of the woman, her working capacity, health, fertility. And the role of adrenal glands here too cannot be underestimated. They produce female sex hormones, and violation of their work leads to violation of hormonal balance, as provokes a headache. Many women can confirm: very often the headache at them develops during the premenstrual period.

Infections can be one more cause of a headache. Our brain has the so-called hematoencephalic barrier protecting it from penetration of various substances and infections. And from neuroinfections, unfortunately, this protection does not work. I will give to you a simple example. At one of our patients who had a headache toxoplasmosis – a disease which carriers there are pets – cats was revealed. As it became clear, at this woman really in the house there lived a striped beauty.

If to estimate prevalence of all these reasons, then neuroinfections occur rather seldom, about 1 time on 300 people, violations of hormonal balance (especially in women) we note in every third case, and we reveal hyperfunction of adrenal glands practically at each our patient.

- But how to get rid of pain when usual drugs "from the head" do not help?

- If we consider that the attack of migraine is not a usual headache, but, first of all, hyperfunction of adrenal glands which constantly produce the adrenaline which literally is "putting pressure" on vessels, then we have to stabilize at first function of adrenal glands and a thyroid gland. Only after it vasodilating medicines can render the real help, improve microcirculation, increase supply of a brain with oxygen, glucose, other substances. Therefore it is necessary to change approach to treatment of migraine.

- What is offered by modern pharmacology for treatment of migraine?

- Pharmacologists propose the solution paradoxical at first sight: to stop migraine attacks the medicines narrowing vessels. Logic here following: if vessels are narrowed also them still in addition to narrow, there is an effect of "string" when on the supernarrowed vessels to adrenal glands there is the return signal and they reduce the activity a little, the condition of the patient is stabilized and there comes relative simplification. But, unfortunately, those medicines which are offered for treatment of migraine today help not always and work only some time so the situation is far from stabilization.
