Breast implants: pros and cons.

Bad reputation

To increase breast volume, esthetic surgeons resort to breast implants. These implants are most often executed on the basis of silicone gels which assume a big variety of a form and very natural structure. At the same time for many years silicone gels were accused of causing various frustration: diseases of the immune system, rheumatologic, (for example, rheumatologic polyarthritis).

After several years of observations and experiments, any above-mentioned charges were dismissed from silicone, the risk of disintegration of silicone gels in a breast was recognized as also minimum.

Therefore, silicone gels since the beginning of 2002 endured new rise in popularity in the world. To which new charge threatened, however. Now more seriously - in provocation of breast cancer.

There is no risk of breast cancer

Some experiments already yielded the calming results demonstrating that female bearers of a chest implant have no more chances to develop breast cancer in comparison with women who never had such implant.

But these data could not be taken for the absolute gospel as researches were conducted on small group of women, and with the term of control observations never reaching 10-15 years.

To achieve crystal-clear results, the Danish physicians investigated about 3,000 women who performed on themselves operation on increase in a breast between 1973 and 1995.

Results of Danes categorically say: no additional risk of breast cancer was registered at bearers of chest implants. Researchers even noted hardly noticeable decrease in this risk.

So, no increase in risk of cancer was revealed at these women, except skin cancer most of which likely was connected with the fact that, on one of hypotheses, the woman with a new bust is more often than others exposed new super - a breast in the sun.

Complications are possible

Chest silicone implants do not increase, thus, risk of cancer. But at the same time many practicing esthetic surgeons recognize that operations on increase in a breast have a number of specific complications.

In January, 2004 Afssaps is the French Agency of Sanitary Safety, said that "The implant filled with silicone gel has a limited expiration date which cannot be estimated precisely a priori as it can depend on many unexpectedly appeared complications", among which:

• The main complication of these implants - "formation of a joint". Formation of the capsule around an implant depends on normal reaction of an organism which forms something like a membrane around any alien fabric in order that to isolate it and to be protected. But in certain cases, this membrane is condensed to form a fibrous shell: it is also formation of a joint. Depending on the weight, formation of this shell can be painful and cause the complications of an esthetic order demanding new intervention.

• Other frequent complication which reduces an implant experience: Gel can filter into a fibrous envelope which surrounds an implant (at the same time no symptom is shown) that can provoke reaction of an organism in relation to this alien body in the form of formation of small knots (siliconomes) and inflammation of lymph nodes. In case of symptomatic violation, the implant will be taken and replaced in the surgical way.

• Formation of folds can appear at the implants overflowed with gel. This esthetic complication can involve premature wear of an implant.
