Decibels of a mobile sound threaten young ears

Децибелы мобильного звука угрожают молодым ушам
The modern earphones used in personal audiodevices seriously increase volume of sound that has negative effect on eardrums and affects auditory acuity. Researchers say that the modern youth became worse to hear. Really. Loss of hearing among teenagers increased by 30 percent in comparison with 1980-1990.

Earlier we had Walkman with two AA-batteries and laid on earphones. At a big loudness the sound was distorted, and batteries were quickly discharged. Today we use smartphones which, being very difficult computer devices, offer the perfect accuracy of reproduction of a sound — the expert Sreekant Cherukuri from the city of Munster told the NBCNews.com agency, the State of Indiana, the USA.

Cherukuri considers that smartphones and audioplayers like iPod are guilty of loss of hearing at modern youth. The expert advises young people to refuse use of earphones inserts which direct a sound closer to an eardrum, increasing loudness by the whole 9 decibels.

By data the World Health Organization (WHO), young people are subject to risk of loss of hearing because of excessive use of sound-reproducing devices, including smartphones and also destructive sound intensity in noisy places, such as night clubs, concert venues and sports bars.

Statistically, teenagers and young people at the age of 12-35 years almost for 50 percent are subject to dangerous levels of a sound which proceed from personal audiodevices and also for 40 percent – from places of noisy entertainments.

Safe levels of influence of sounds, under WHO recommendations, should not exceed 85 decibels (dB) within eight hours or 100 dB within 15 minutes.

Nervous synapses are more vulnerable to damages, than hair touch cells of an inner ear. The research on animals showed that even one-time influence by intensive noise accelerates hearing loss process in the future.

According to experts, the best way to protect young ears from a loud sound – to follow the rule "60 on 60". According to this rule, it is necessary to listen to music at a volume of 60 percent from the maximum loudness of a MP3 player, and it is no more than 60 minutes in day. econet.ru is published
